<p>Coast Care Week is the perfect opportunity for teachers to empower students to understand and protect Queensland’s unique coastal environments. From the golden <strong>beaches of the</strong> <strong>Sunshine Coast</strong> to the world-famous and epic <strong>Great Barrier Reef</strong>, students can explore the wonders of our local shores while <strong>learning how human activity and climate change threaten these fragile <a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/sharks-role-in-ocean-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ecosystems</a></strong>.</p>

Ideas could include reef-friendly sunscreen campaigns, artificial reef structures, or awareness programs targeting tourists.</li>

<h4><strong>Bringing Coast Care Week Alive</strong></h4>
<p>To make these projects truly effective:</p>

<li>Use real-time data from government or NGO sites for reef and coastal conditions.</li>
<li>Encourage cross-curricular integration: science (ecosystems, climate change), English (storytelling, presentations), and civics (community engagement).</li>

<p>By focusing on <strong>hands-on projects, storytelling, and citizen science</strong>, Coast Care Week can spark curiosity and inspire students to become lifelong protectors of Queensland’s shores and the Great Barrier Reef.</p>

<p>When we think of <strong>ocean survivors</strong>, the humble <strong>hermit crab</strong> might not be the first marine animal that comes to mind. Yet these fascinating crustaceans (yes, they are still crustaceans!) are extraordinary examples of how <a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Adaptation-Fact-Sheet_watermark-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">adaptation</a> and <strong>habitat use</strong> are key to survival &#8211; a lesson that resonates strongly in our rapidly changing <strong>ocean environment</strong>.</p>

<p>Unlike true crabs, <strong>hermit crabs</strong> don’t have hard shells to protect their soft abdomen. Instead, they occupy <strong>discarded shells</strong> or even shell-like objects for safety &#8211; literally carrying their<a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/teaching-human-impact-on-marine-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> habitat</a> wherever they go.</p>
<p>As they grow, hermit crabs must <strong>swap their shells</strong> for larger ones to fit their increasing size and avoid suffocation. For most species, this happens every 12–18 months.</p>
<p>This unique <strong>adaptation</strong> highlights their <strong>resourcefulness</strong> and <strong>resilience</strong>. In a changing <strong>marine environment</strong>, hermit crabs remind us that survival often depends on creativity and flexibility.</p>
<h4><strong>What Makes Hermit Crabs So Adaptable?</strong></h4>
<p>One of the most important <strong>adaptations</strong> of hermit crabs is their <strong>asymmetric body</strong>. Their curved abdomen and uneven claws allow them to fit snugly into the spiral of empty shells. Using their strong abdominal muscles, they grip tightly inside their protective home.</p>
<p>This relationship between <strong>adaptation and habitat</strong> is what allows them to thrive &#8211; but it also makes them vulnerable when those habitats are under threat.</p>
<h4><strong>Adapting to a Shifting Habitat</strong></h4>
<p>Hermit crabs face challenges not only from predators but also from <strong>environmental change</strong>. Rising sea temperatures, <strong>ocean acidification</strong>, and <strong>plastic pollution</strong> affect the availability of suitable shells. In some regions, crabs have been found using <strong>plastic bottle caps</strong> and other discarded plastic instead of natural shells &#8211; a confronting example of how marine animals adapt when their habitats are compromised.</p>
<p>Through their story, students can clearly see the real-world impacts of human behaviour on <strong>marine habitats and ecosystems</strong> &#8211; and how even the smallest creatures must adapt in surprising (and sometimes concerning) ways.</p>

<p>The <strong>Great Barrier Reef</strong> off the East coast of Australia, is the world’s largest coral reef system and a living example of biodiversity and ecological complexity. The reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast and is a collection of unique <strong>marine habitats</strong> that support thousands of diverse species, from tiny plankton to massive humpback whales.</p>

<h4>Sea Country: The Great Barrier Reef</h4>
<p><strong>Australia&#8217;s First Nations </strong>have a deep connection to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). To them it is known as &#8220;Sea Country&#8221;. <strong>Approximately 70 First Nations groups </strong>are <strong>Traditional Owners of the GBR</strong> and have been caring for it for millennia.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most iconic feature of the Great Barrier Reef, coral reefs are built by tiny coral polyps over thousands of years. These amazing limestone structures are home to an extraordinary range of species including fish, sea turtles, sea stars, and crustaceans, all of which <strong>depend on the complex network of coral for food, shelter, and breeding grounds</strong>.</p>
<p>Coral reefs are incredibly sensitive to changes in the environment, and therefore powerful indicators of reef health. They make a great introduction to discussions about <strong>climate change and conservation.</strong></p>

<p>Often found in shallow coastal waters, seagrass beds are a significant and crucial part of the reef’s ecosystem. These flowering marine plants (not to be confused with seaweed!) <strong>provide </strong><strong>essential habitats, food sources, and nurseries for numerous marine animals</strong>, such as dugongs and green sea turtles.</p>
<p>Seagrass also <strong>stabilises the sea floor and improves water quality</strong> by trapping sediment and in recent years has gained attention for its role in <strong>carbon absorption</strong>.</p>

<p>Mangroves can be found growing along tidal shorelines where saltwater meets land. Their tangled roots create <strong>a nursery environment for juvenile fish, crabs, and prawns</strong>, sheltering them from predators and strong currents.</p>
<p>Mangroves act as <strong>natural coastal defenders</strong>, absorbing wave energy during storms, reducing erosion, and helping protect the land and coral reefs from sediment runoff. Their importance for biodiversity and shoreline protection makes them <strong>a critical habitat</strong> and removing them and harming them can have great consequences for coastal erosion.</p>

<p>The area that is <strong>above water at low tide and underwater at high tide</strong> is known as the intertidal zone. This region is teeming with life, despite often appearing harsh and exposed. In this zone, <strong>creatures must adapt to rapidly varying conditions</strong>, <span style="color: #000000;">including temperature changes, exposure to the air, and wave action.</span></p>

This vast, deep-water habitat <strong>supports movement and migration and large migratory species</strong> such as <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/whale-resources/">whales</a>, <a style="color: #000000;" href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/shark-resources/">sharks</a>, tuna, and seabirds.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">This vast zone is vital to the health of the reef itself, with nutrient-rich currents, plankton, and marine mammals all linking the open ocean/ pelagic zone to the inshore ecosystems of the reef.</span></p>
