<p>Every year, mainly between May and October, humpback whales migrate along Australia’s East Coast, providing <strong>a real-world example for studying classification</strong> in the science classroom. These iconic gentle giants really capture students’ imagination and offer <strong>the perfect living opportunity to teach key biological concepts</strong> like <strong>grouping living things, external features, adaptation, and habitats. </strong>In this blog, we look at how to <strong>use humpback whales to support curriculum-aligned learning</strong> for primary students, with a focus on humpback whale <strong>classification, adaptations, and marine ecosystems and habitats</strong>.</p>

<p>Whales are classified in the order of <strong>cetaceans</strong> (the same as dolphins and porpoises). Cetaceans are mammals that are adapted to life in the ocean.</p>

<p>The <strong>Great Barrier Reef</strong> off the East coast of Australia, is the world’s largest coral reef system and a living example of biodiversity and ecological complexity. The reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast and is a collection of unique <strong>marine habitats</strong> that support thousands of diverse species, from tiny plankton to massive humpback whales.</p>

<h4>Sea Country: The Great Barrier Reef</h4>
<p><strong>Australia&#8217;s First Nations </strong>have a deep connection to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). To them it is known as &#8220;Sea Country&#8221;. <strong>Approximately 70 First Nations groups </strong>are <strong>Traditional Owners of the GBR</strong> and have been caring for it for millennia.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most iconic feature of the Great Barrier Reef, coral reefs are built by tiny coral polyps over thousands of years. These amazing limestone structures are home to an extraordinary range of species including fish, sea turtles, sea stars, and crustaceans, all of which <strong>depend on the complex network of coral for food, shelter, and breeding grounds</strong>.</p>
<p>Coral reefs are incredibly sensitive to changes in the environment, and therefore powerful indicators of reef health. They make a great introduction to discussions about <strong>climate change and conservation.</strong></p>

<h4><strong> Seagrass Meadows: Underwater Pastures</strong></h4>

<p>Often found in shallow coastal waters, seagrass beds are a significant and crucial part of the reef’s ecosystem. These flowering marine plants (not to be confused with seaweed!) <strong>provide </strong><strong>essential habitats, food sources, and nurseries for numerous marine animals</strong>, such as dugongs and green sea turtles.</p>
<p>Seagrass also <strong>stabilises the sea floor and improves water quality</strong> by trapping sediment and in recent years has gained attention for its role in <strong>carbon absorption</strong>.</p>

<p>Mangroves can be found growing along tidal shorelines where saltwater meets land. Their tangled roots create <strong>a nursery environment for juvenile fish, crabs, and prawns</strong>, sheltering them from predators and strong currents.</p>
<p>Mangroves act as <strong>natural coastal defenders</strong>, absorbing wave energy during storms, reducing erosion, and helping protect the land and coral reefs from sediment runoff. Their importance for biodiversity and shoreline protection makes them <strong>a critical habitat</strong> and removing them and harming them can have great consequences for coastal erosion.</p>

<h4><strong> Intertidal Zones: Life Between the Tides</strong></h4>

<p>The area that is <strong>above water at low tide and underwater at high tide</strong> is known as the intertidal zone. This region is teeming with life, despite often appearing harsh and exposed. In this zone, <strong>creatures must adapt to rapidly varying conditions</strong>, <span style="color: #000000;">including temperature changes, exposure to the air, and wave action.</span></p>

In understanding such impacts, we can <strong>teach students how to protect the fragile </strong><a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/sharks-role-in-ocean-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ecosystems </a><strong>that sustain life on earth</strong>.</p>
<h4><strong>Australia&#8217;s Great Barrier Reef: A Unique Marine Habitat at Risk</strong></h4>

<p>Located along Australia’s northeast coast and <strong>spanning over 2,300 kilometres,</strong> The Great Barrier Reef, is one of the world’s most complex and diverse ecosystems.  It is home to <strong>over 1,500 species of fish, 400 types of coral, and a diverse range of other marine creatures</strong> like sea turtles and dugongs. This beautiful and vibrant reef is an <strong>essential marine habitat</strong> that supports abundant marine life, <strong>protects Australia&#8217;s eastern coastlines from erosion, and contributes to global climate regulation.</strong></p>
<p>However, this remarkable <strong>ecosystem is under threat due to </strong><a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/ocean-conservation-for-kids-inspiring-environmental-stewardship-in-early-years-and-primary-schools/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">human impact</a><strong>. Climate change, pollution, and overfishing</strong> are causing severe disruptions, including <strong>coral bleaching and the destruction of critical habitats.</strong> If we don’t act soon, the survival of the Great Barrier Reef’s diverse species—and the livelihoods of Australian communities that rely on it—will be at risk.</p>
<h4><strong>The Effect of Human Impact on Australian Marine Ecosystems &#8211; Coral Bleaching</strong></h4>

<p><strong>Coral bleaching occurs due to rising ocean temperatures.</strong> <strong><a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/ocean-conservation-for-kids-inspiring-environmental-stewardship-in-early-years-and-primary-schools/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Human Impact</a> contributes to this climate change, </strong>as pollutants from vehicles and factories create an insulative layer in our atmosphere. <strong>Persistently warmer water temperatures cause corals to expel the algae that provide them with food and vibrant colours. Without these algae, corals become vulnerable and they eventually die</strong>, leaving behind a bleached, lifeless coral reef. Temperature rise isn’t the only problem—<strong>ocean acidification, driven by increased carbon dioxide levels, also weakens coral skeletons</strong>, making them more susceptible to damage.</p>
<p><strong>Marine <a href="https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/sharks-role-in-ocean-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ecosystems</a> are disrupted by the loss of coral reefs</strong> and this in turn harms local economies, including tourism and fishing industries that depend on these habitats for healthy fish stocks.</p>
<h4><strong>Polar Bears and Habitat Loss: The Impact of Melting Ice</strong></h4>
<p>The melting of polar ice caps is one of the most visible effects of human impact.<strong> These ice caps provide critical habitat for polar bears, who rely on the sea ice for resting, hunting, and breeding.</strong> As ocean temperatures rise, polar bear&#8217;s ice habitat is rapidly disappearing, causing them to need to travel and swim longer distances to find food. This can lead to exhaustion and starvation.</p>
<p>This reduction in the volume of ice also <strong>brings polar bears into closer contact with humans</strong> as they search for food in populated areas inland, increasing the potential for conflict. If global temperatures continue to rise, polar bears and the Arctic ecosystem could be in jeopardy .</p>
<p><strong>2025 was named the <a href="https://www.un-glaciers.org/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UN International Year of Glacier&#8217;s Preservation</a>. </strong>This is to highlight the importance of glaciers and the fact that they are disappearing at an alarming rate,</p>
<h4><strong>How Schools Can Help Protect Habitats and Ecosystems</strong></h4>
