Clean Up Australia Day: Beach Cleans in Queensland

Clean Up Australia Day offers schools the chance to combine environmental stewardship with hands-on learning. In Queensland, schools can organize student-led beach clean-ups, focusing on local coastal areas. These events not only help protect marine ecosystems but also teach students about the impact of pollution on ocean life. Ocean Life Education can enhance the experience by hosting an on-location Human Impact program delivered by one of our qualified Marine Educators and focusing on our live marine animals and using educational resources and fascinating artefacts to bring learning to life.

How to Get Invoved in a Beach Clean 

Book Week, 16-23 August 2025: Popular Ocean Science Books for Primary Schools

Book Week is a fantastic opportunity to inspire curiosity about the ocean through engaging stories and informative texts. Popular books like “Big Blue Whale” by Nicola Davies, “Ocean Speaks” (inspiration for science learning) by Jess Keating, and “The Brilliant Deep” (coral restoration) by Kate Messner bring ocean science to life for young readers. Incorporating these books into classroom activities, such as art projects or creative writing inspired by the stories, can deepen students’ understanding of marine environments.

Under 8s Week, 19-23 May 2025: Ocean-Themed Activities for Young Learners

Under 8s Day celebrates the importance of learning in the early years of a child’s life, and an ocean theme is perfect for engaging young minds. Schools can set up activity stations with ocean-themed crafts like creating jellyfish mobiles, sensory play with water and sea animal toys, or storytelling sessions featuring ocean adventures. A mini “beach day” with sand play and shells can also bring the thrill of the sea into your location.

Science Week 2025, 9-17 August: Nature’s Hidden Language

Science Week’s theme, “Nature’s Hidden Language,” offers a chance to explore the fascinating ways marine life communicates and interacts. From the clicking sounds of dolphins to the bioluminescent signals of deep-sea creatures, students can dive into the mysteries of the ocean. Schools can host hands-on workshops, like building underwater sound detectors or experimenting with light patterns, to uncover these hidden languages. Guest talks from marine biologists and educators can further inspire budding scientists. Our interactive marine displays offer the opportunity to observe communication and interaction firsthand. Sea stars for example, primarily communicate through chemical signals by releasing chemicals into the water, which can alert other sea stars to potential dangers. By including an Ocean Life Education interactive display in your science week event, students can observe how this happens first hand.

State Education Week, 21-25 October 2025: Ocean-Themed Initiatives for Schools

State Education Week provides a platform to showcase innovative programs and celebrate school achievements. Schools can organize ocean-themed events such as student-led exhibitions, where projects on marine conservation and ocean ecosystems are displayed. Collaborative art installations, like a mural made from recycled materials, can involve the entire school community. Hosting open days with marine education activities and inviting local environmental groups can highlight the school’s commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning. World Ocean Day UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021-2030)

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) is a global initiative designed to advance international collaboration in ocean science to address critical environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development goals. This initiative aims to enhance our understanding of the ocean, foster innovation, and build partnerships that contribute to creating sustainable solutions for marine and coastal ecosystems.

Goals of the Decade

The overarching vision of the Decade is to deliver the “science we need for the future we want,” ensuring that oceans remain healthy and resilient for current and future generations. Key objectives include:

  • A Clean Ocean: Identifying and significantly reducing sources of pollution.
  • A Healthy and Resilient Ocean: Understanding, protecting, and restoring marine ecosystems through sustainable management practices.

By prioritizing scientific research, technological innovation, and global cooperation, this initiative aspires to ensure that oceans can continue to support biodiversity, climate stability, and human livelihoods.

The Decade represents a call to action for researchers, policymakers, educators, and citizens worldwide to work together toward sustainable ocean stewardship.

World Whale Day – 16 February 2025

World Whale Day, held annually on the third Sunday of February, celebrates the beauty and importance of whales while raising awareness about the challenges they face. Whales are vital to ocean health, contributing to carbon capture and nutrient recycling.

World Ocean Day UN Decade of Ocean Science 2021-2030

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) is a global initiative aimed at promoting international cooperation and collaboration in ocean science to achieve sustainable development goals.

The decade focuses on enhancing scientific knowledge of the ocean, developing innovative technologies, and fostering partnerships to address the challenges facing the ocean and coastal areas. The overarching goal is to ensure a healthy and resilient ocean that can support current and future generations.

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to reduce their plastic usage during the month of July. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastics and inspire people to make conscious efforts to minimize their plastic consumption.

Participants in Plastic Free July commit to avoiding the use of single-use plastics such as plastic bags, bottles, straws, and packaging for the entire month. The campaign provides resources, tips, and challenges to help individuals make sustainable choices, adopt plastic-free habits, and contribute to reducing plastic pollution.

Shark Awareness Day: 14 July 2024

Sharks get a huge amount of bad press, yet on average one person is killed by a shark in Australia each year and heaps more are killed by horses and cows!! Without sharks in Australian waters, many ecosystems would not be sustainable, and we would be denied the pleasure of exploring amazing underwater habitats such as the world’s largest natural wonder, Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. Coastcare comprises volunteers from Australia who are passionate about safeguarding our remarkable coastal and marine environments. Australia’s SeaWeek is celebrated throughout the country at the beginning of March each year. The initiative aims to spotlight community awareness, inform, and foster an appreciation for the sea. This is a fascinating topic and a great basis for exploring all things relating to the ocean in schools and childcare settings. So, here is some background information plus 20 teaching activities for SeaWeek that will engage and inspire kids to want to learn more about and protect the ocean. Why is the Ocean a Defining Feature of Our Planet?

The ocean is the defining physical feature on our planet Earth as it covers most of the earth’s surface – around 70% in fact.

It is also home to the majority of life on earth and responsible for around 70% of the oxygen we breath, as well as absorbtion of carbon dioxide, climate regulation, jobs, food, waste removal, , marine transport, medicine, travel, recreation and fun. We could go on…

Do we say Ocean or Oceans?

Many people ask the question, “Do we say ocean or oceans”?  The answer is that there is just one ocean, which contains many ocean basins, such as the North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic. So, we should say ‘the ocean’ rather than ‘the oceans’.

What is SeaWeek Australia?

SeaWeek Australia started in 1987 at the Marine Discovery Centre, Queenscliff, Victoria. It began as an art competition that was promoted in all states of Australia and was accompanied by an educational kit consisting of marine activities and information brochures. Today SeaWeek Australia is a major public awareness campaign focusing on encouraging an understanding of and appreciation for the ocean and all things related to it. The campaign is promoted by the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) – see link below.

World Sea Turtle Day 2022: 16 June

World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated each year on 16 June 2022, as it is the birthday of Dr. Archie Carr, the aclaimed “father of sea turtle biology.”  His research highlighted the plight of sea turtles and has driven community support to protect them.

 

 

Many people fear sharks because of shock stories in the media and scary films like Jaws. The fact is that sharks are a crucial part of the food chain that help keep the oceans and planet healthy. Without sharks in Australian waters, many ecosystems would not be sustainable, and would die off forever. Shark Awareness Day 2022 aims to separate fact from myth and promote a positive image for these amazing creatures.
