<h4>Ocean Life Education&#8217;s Habitats Program</h4>
<p>Ocean Life Education’s <em>Habitats &#8211; Physical Conditions</em> program elevates Year 6 students&#8217; understanding of habitats by focusing on marine environments. Students will explore the specific physical conditions required for marine animals to survive and thrive. They will learn how changes to these conditions can negatively affect marine life, leading to poor health or even death. The program encourages discussions on strategies to prevent these harmful impacts in the future.</p>

<p>Our focus will be on Queensland’s coral reef habitat, particularly the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest fringing reef, located right at our doorstep. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, it is essential to understand the physical conditions necessary for its survival so we can work to preserve it for the future.</p>

<h4><strong>What is Coral?</strong></h4>

<p>Though corals resemble plants on the ocean floor, they are actually marine animals related to jellyfish and sea anemones. Corals belong to the Cnidaria group, known for their stinging tentacles.</p>
<p>These invertebrates are colonial organisms, meaning many individuals live and grow connected in colonies. The Great Barrier Reef hosts around six hundred coral species which are made up of polyps, clear tube-like structures with stinging tentacles used for catching prey and defence.</p>
<h4><strong>Coral Reef Habitat – Necessities to Thrive</strong></h4>
<p><strong>Temperature</strong>: Corals thrive in warm tropical waters, ideally between 23–29°C.</p>
<p><strong>Salinity</strong>: They prefer salty conditions with salinity levels between 32–42 ppt.</p>
<p><strong>Light</strong>: Sunlight is crucial for coral survival, as symbiotic algae within them need to photosynthesize to produce food.</p>
<p><strong>Nutrients</strong>: Low nutrient levels are important to prevent smothering; calcium is essential for building coral skeletons.</p>
<p><strong>Current Flow</strong>: Currents bring food, calcium, and disperse sediment, aiding in photosynthesis and coral spawn distribution.</p>
<p><strong>Waves</strong>: Waves provide oxygen, food, and prevent sediment buildup on corals.</p>
<p><strong>Turbidity</strong>: Low turbidity ensures sunlight penetration, crucial for coral survival.</p>
<p><strong>Depth</strong>: Corals thrive in shallow waters, up to 70 meters, but prefer depths between the surface and 30 meters for optimal sunlight.</p>

<p>Students will explore how human activities have altered the reef&#8217;s physical habitat and its effects on marine life. They will also discuss strategies to minimize negative impacts on the reef now and in the future.</p>
<h4><strong>Coral Bleaching</strong></h4>
<p>Climate change has raised water temperatures, especially in the northern Great Barrier Reef, surpassing 29°C and causing coral bleaching. Discussions will cover human actions like carbon pollution from cars and factories that accelerate climate change. Students will learn about coral bleaching, its causes, and potential prevention measures.</p>
<h4><strong>Land Clearing</strong></h4>
<p>The removal of trees and vegetation near coastal and river areas increases soil erosion, leading to sediment washing into oceans. This sediment smothers and kills coral. Students will investigate the effects of land clearing on marine environments.</p>
<h4><strong>Extension to Human Impact on the Ocean</strong></h4>
<p>Other human activities like plastic pollution and the use of shark nets and baited drum lines for shark control will be discussed. Students will learn about plastic&#8217;s harmful effects on marine life, particularly sea turtles.</p>
<p>The use of shark nets and drum lines since 1962, which results in unnecessary harm to marine animals, will be debated. The discussion will focus on modern, more effective technologies for protecting humans and marine life at beaches.</p>

One of our most popular programs is <strong>Classification</strong>, which focuses on helping students organize their understanding of the world around them, enhancing critical thinking and observational skills.</p>

<p>During our Classification incursions, students will explore <strong>the grouping of living organisms</strong> based on their observed features, functions, and adaptations for survival. They will <strong>understand the reasons behind animal classification</strong> and discover both similarities and differences among various marine animals. Additionally, <strong>the importance of scientific communication </strong>will be emphasised, and<strong> students will engage in simple classification exercises</strong> of marine species <strong>using scientific conventions for naming species</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>We bring a fascinating and diverse range of live marine animals</strong> along to our science incursions, including <strong>a </strong><strong>baby shark, a freshwater turtle, a variety of sea stars, sea cucumbers and sea urchins</strong>. <p>Sea stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers are all classified as echinoderms &#8211; named for the spines or bumps covering the outer surface of the bodies (Greek root word <em>echino</em>&#8211; meaning <em>spiny</em>; Latin root word &#8211;<em>derm</em> meaning <em>skin</em>).</p>
<p>Children learn that echinoderms, despite their diverse appearances, share <strong>two key features</strong> that distinguish them from other animals:<strong> a water vascular system and five-sided radial symmetry</strong>. These characteristics are fundamental to their movement and body structure, <strong>highlighting the unique adaptations of this fascinating group</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>The water vascular system</strong> in echinoderms consists of canals filled with seawater that aid movement, feeding, nutrition, and respiration. Hydraulic pressure allows tube feet to extend and retract, enabling them to move around and interact with their environment.</p>
<p><strong>The pentamerous radial symmetry structure</strong> of echinoderms makes the body strong as a five-segment skeleton is stronger than a four- or six-sided one (because the line of weakness cannot run directly across the body).</p>
<p>Our sea stars, urchins and cucumbers offer a fitting example of all these characteristics and the children have fun while learning to classify them themselves. We also discuss how our shark and turtle may be classified but in less detail.</p>

This is a great activity for year 7 science as students become scientists, drawing their own conclusions from the data and observations.</p>

Our team meet the students at a designated spot, and we explore and research the environment together before returning to our live marine animals to put things into context.</p>

By interacting with a diverse array of marine life, they gain insights into reproduction, birth, and growth stages across different species and experience first-hand differences that exist between living and non-living things. <p>During this engaging incursion, we highlight the different ways in which our ocean creatures come into the world.</p>
<p>Our sea stars, sea cucumbers and sea urchins offer wonderful examples of exterior fertilization…where adults release eggs and sperm into the water. And our sharks and freshwater turtles provide living proof of how interior fertilisation occurs in other species.</p>
<h4><strong>Incredible Ocean Births</strong></h4>
<p>Students find out that not all animals are born the same way and that our sharks and freshwater turtles hatch from eggs as perfect miniature versions of their parents. Whereas our sea stars and sea urchins start out their life as a plankton, later going through dramatic change (metamorphosis) to become like their parents.</p>
<p>We love seeing the surprise on children’s faces as they contemplate these mind-blowing wonders of nature!</p>

<p>Focusing on our sharks, we then discuss the three different ways in which they may be born, according to the species. Some sharks are born from eggs (like our little ones), some are born alive (like us), e.g. Great Whites, Tiger Sharks and Whaler Sharks, and then there are some like the Grey Nurse Shark that are a combination of the two.</p>
<p>Students love exploring sharks and discussing how and why they have evolved in these ways.</p>

<p>Some animals travel long distances as part of their life cycle, such as Humpback Whales that travel from Antarctica up into the tropical waters off Queensland’s coast to give birth to their calves in warmer waters. Through suckling their young, the females provide calves with the energy and precious fat stores needed to survive the long migration back down to the icy southern waters where they feed on plankton during the Antarctic Summer, before commencing the incredible journey again.</p>
<p>The humpback whale migration begins in May/June heading north off the Australian coastline. We can observe the humpback whales travelling back down to the Antarctic during the months of September and October.</p>

<p>Our Year Three life cycles incursion also teaches students about fundamental biological processes such as the need for food, reproduction, shelter-seeking behaviours, classifying the difference between living and non-living things, adaptation to habitats, and mobility.</p>

<p>This is a fun and exhilarating way for students to grasp all the key concepts about living things and their habitat.</p>

<p>In the planning stages, we work with schools and home school centres to ensure your needs are met, and that we are focusing on what’s relevant to your teaching goals. If you have a special area of interest, we will concentrate on that.</p>
<p>Then, on the day of the incursion, our enthusiastic Marine Educators deliver highly educational, fun and engaging incursion that children will remember for a lifetime.</p>

<p>Updating the team page on our website this month made us think that it’s about time to do a blog post dedicated to the incredible people who make our programs so popular – the wonderful crew at Ocean Life Education!</p>
<p>We really do have the best team imaginable who all have one thing in common – their passion for the ocean and their enthusiasm for wanting to share their knowledge and educate others about the big blue.</p>

<p><strong>Fascination with Marine Life:</strong> The incredible diversity of marine organisms, from the smallest plankton to the largest whales, captures the imagination. The intricate behaviours, unique adaptations, and complex ecosystems of marine life provide endless opportunities for discovery and study.</p>

What an impressive range, demonstrating  just how incredible life in the ocean is.</p>

<p><strong>Environmental Stewardship:</strong> A desire to protect and preserve ocean ecosystems against the increasing threats to marine environments, such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change, drive them to work towards conservation and sustainability.</p>

<p><strong>Many of our educators</strong> have worked on environmental projects themselves. Director of Education, Richard Coward, has been involved in research projects such as buoyancy syndrome turtle research, shark research and breeding programs.</p>
<p>Many staff, including Richard, have also been involved in rescues, resulting in the release of whales and turtles (amongst other species) back into the wild.</p>

<p><strong>Love of Exploration:</strong> The ocean is still largely unexplored, offering a sense of adventure and the allure of uncovering new species, unknown habitats, and geological features.</p>
<p>The mystery and vastness of the ocean inspire curiosity and a spirit of discovery in our crew.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;I was amazed when I went diving at night in Papua New Guinea and was lucky enough to experience a coral spawning event in an ocean that was glowing with bioluminescence (the production and emission of light by a living organism &#8211; seen in the image). It just blew my mind! Another time, I was awe-struck when I went diving with a smack (yes, the collective name!) of sea jellies (aka jelly fish). Magic moments that I will treasure forever&#8230;and there&#8217;s so much more to come!!&#8221;</em></p>

<h4>Growing Up on the Coast</h4>
<p><strong>Connection to Nature:</strong> Our educators all love the ocean, often stemming from childhood experiences, such as beach visits, snorkelling, or scuba diving. This personal connection fuels a lifelong passion for studying and protecting marine environments.</p>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">How Whale Poo Fights Climate Change &#8211; The Whale Pump</h3>
<p>As whales surface from deep dives to breathe and poo, they circulate huge amounts of nutrients from the sea floor. This process is called the &#8220;Whale Pump&#8221;.</p>
<p>The whale poo acts as an excellent fertiliser for ocean plants called phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is at the bottom of the food chain and is a very important primary producer (food source) for the marine ecosystem. It also removes millions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere and produces huge amounts of oxygen.</p>
<p>These tiny organisms (phytoplankton) absorb one-third of the carbon dioxide humans breathe out. They also produce half of the planet&#8217;s oxygen. So, as you can see, keeping this process working and our oceans healthy is crucial to our survival!</p>
<p>During long migrations, such as the one currently taking place off the East Coast of Australia, whales travel from nutrient-rich areas to nutrient-poor areas. This journey transports essential nutrients across the ocean in a process known as the “Great Whale Conveyor Belt”. So, whale migration has a big impact on the health of our oceans too.</p>
<p>Over 20,000 humpback whales are traveling up our coast right now! This is an amazing opportunity to teach students curriculum topics using an iconic, local theme. <p><strong>Ocean Life Education</strong>’s Director of Education, Richard Coward, is a firm believer that education is the key to protecting the ocean. So, Richard has spent the past 14 years visiting schools, early learning centres and community events, passionately educating and inspiring young minds to feel a responsibility to protect the our seas.</p>

<h4><strong>A Passion for Protecting the Ocean</strong></h4>
<p>Ocean Life Education was set up in 2006 by Director of Education and Marine Biologist, Richard Coward. Richard studied Marine Ecology at Queensland’s Griffith University and commenced his career running Sunshine Coast’s Underwater World education programs and was later promoted to Curator of Fishes.</p>
<p>Richard went on to work on the creation of a new aquarium in South Korea. Whilst diving in the ocean, he was astonished by the complete lack of marine life. This was the first time he had experienced first-hand the devastating consequences of human impact caused by over-fishing. This education inspired him to take action. Richard saw this as a wakeup call and was determined this was not going to be allowed to happen in Australia. Thus, his passion for protecting the ocean was born.</p>
<p>Richard’s career went off down many paths: managing exhibits in aquariums worldwide and working with sharks, seals, penguins, turtles, sea jellies, fish, octopus, and invertebrates, to name a few.  He has been involved in research projects and breeding programs as well as whale rescue and his knowledge has frequently been reported on television, including a whole feature on the Totally Wild television show. Throughout all this, promoting conservation has always been at the heart of what he does.</p>

<h4><strong>Taking the Ocean into the Classroom</strong></h4>
<p>Richard soon realised that educating future generations was the key to them understanding why the ocean is so important to us and inspiring them to take action to protect it. &#8220;You protect what you love&#8221;, he quotes.</p>
<p>But many children were unable to get to the ocean or even to an aquarium to experience ocean life first-hand, so the idea of taking the ocean to the classroom was hatched and Ocean Life Education was born.</p>

<p>Since 2006, Ocean Life Education has promoted the protection of our oceans to hundreds and thousands of Australians throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Our aim is to bring the sea to the community or classroom.  Marine educators arrive with live marine animals, fascinating artefacts, games and resources and students get a hands-on experience interacting with the animals. They hopefully finish off knowledgeable and inspired to want to protect the ocean and passionate to tell their friends and families why they should do the same.</p>

<p>Every winter, anyone along the East Coast of Australia gets a front row seat for one of nature’s most spectacular shows.</p>
<p>The stars are humpback whales – massive marine mammals that like to steal the limelight.  These traveller performers drop by on their 25,000 kilometre round trip between Antarctica and their breeding grounds in the tropics.</p>
<p>These acrobatic animals are definite crowd pleasers – playing to an appreciative audience….</p>
<p>Just the sight of a spout is enough to cause a commotion…and little wonder.  After holding their breath for twenty minutes, humpbacks can exhale several metres into the air…..</p>
<p>But it’s really just the warm up &#8211; the opening act can be pectoral fin slaps…. When their five metre long appendages slam onto the ocean surface – a wakeup call for anyone close by.</p>
<p>Tail slaps are another great way to grab attention. One is never enough.  It’s an opportunity to show off their personal fluke pattern – the best way to identify a humpback….</p>
<p>If they sense they’re losing their audience, the whales can opt for a spy hop – raising their head out of the water to assess the world around them….</p>
<p>But the absolute shop stopper is the full body breach – when up to 30 tonnes of mammal is launched into the air and slams back down.  The impact is phenomenal – seen and heard from kilometres away.</p>
<p>There’s lots of different theories as to why whales perform this manoeuvre – some feel it’s a way to communicate with other humpbacks close by; others believe it’s like a giant stretch after a long rest – a signal they’re about to get active again.</p>
<p>Either way its unforgettable – and can only be topped if there’s an understudy in tow.  Young calves accompany their mothers on the trip back south, eager to try out their performance skills as well.</p>
<p>At just five metres long, they’re only a fraction of their Mum’s size but still capable of making their presence felt.  Drinking 400 litres of milk a day, these youngsters grow quickly and by this time next year will be ready to go solo.</p>
<p>In a final bow to the crowd, the whales lift their tails and disappear from stage – diving deep and leaving the audience wanting more, with no indication where and when their next performance will be.</p>

<p>Our touch tanks are a home away from home for our animal ambassadors and we work hard to ensure things are as stress free as possible while they play a vital role in helping children understand and appreciate the aquatic world.</p>
<p>They travel all over Brisbane and the rest of South East Queensland, visiting early learning centres, schools and shopping centres, giving youngsters the opportunity to get up close and personal with these exotic creatures.</p>
<p>Under careful supervision, children are able to gently interact with our sea stars, sea cucumbers and spiny urchins, using our one finger touch policy that ensures our animals remain relatively undisturbed while cocooned in their cases.</p>
<p>To protect both animal and young enthusiast, our baby sharks are carefully contained in see through containers which allow for thorough inspection without causing damage.</p>
<p>Likewise, the colourful tropical sea cucumbers have such delicate feeding tentacles, they need to be kept clear of probing fingers.</p>

<p>But the fresh water turtles are only too willing to subject themselves to some soothing shell massage, all in the name of fostering a greater human/animal relationship.</p>
<p>We limit the amount of time our animal ambassadors spend away from their homes, rotating our starfish, cucumbers, urchins, sharks and turtles to make sure they are well rested and fed before embarking on their next mission to help save the oceans.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the past few years, hundreds of primary schoolers have enjoyed our holiday sessions that inspire them to care for the ocean &#8211; now it’s time for the <strong>high</strong> <strong>schoolers</strong> to get in on the action.</p>
<p>Due to popular demand, our <strong>Marine Biologist for a Day</strong> program has been adapted to cater for an older audience who want a more in depth look at the world of marine science.</p>
<p>Students will have the chance to examine in detail our impact on the ocean including environmental <strong>stress on coral reef systems</strong>, <strong>water acidification</strong> and <strong>plastic pollution</strong>.  We will discuss a wide range of ideas on how to better care for the health of our seas.</p>
<p>The aim of the program is to making learning <strong>fun and relevant</strong>, examining animal classification to discover how each creature fits into the aquatic world.</p>
<p>The program will be very interactive, with students observing the <strong>dissection</strong> of a dead fish to reveal the organ make-up and development of a mullet.</p>
<p>And our most popular feature will still be included – the chance to <strong>gently touch</strong> our living sea creatures – an opportunity that never gets old at any age!</p>
<p>This program will provide a valuable insight to the workings of the aquatic world for any high schooler who has a passion for the ocean or is considering a <strong>career in marine sciences</strong>.</p>
<p>But we haven’t forgotten the younger students – our classic Marine Biologist for a Day will still be running in school holidays – we’re just expanding the program to grow with your kids.</p>
