Coast Care Week: Inspiring Students to Protect East Australia’s Shores

Coast Care Week is the perfect opportunity for teachers to empower students to understand and protect Queensland’s unique coastal environments. From the golden beaches of the Sunshine Coast to the world-famous and epic Great Barrier Reef, students can explore the wonders of our local shores while learning how human activity and climate change threaten these fragile ecosystems.

This year, why not try experiential and project-based learning? Here’s a set of fresh, hands-on ideas for the classroom.

 

Coastal Citizen Scientists

  • Age Group: Upper Primary & Secondary
  • Activity: Students adopt a local stretch of coast (or use virtual tools if a field trip isn’t possible) to monitor Ocean excursion environmental indicators: sand erosion, litter, water clarity, or marine life sightings.
  • Twist: Students upload findings to a shared Padlet board. This builds a real-time picture of local coastal health and encourages collaboration.
  • Learning Outcome: Students practice data collection, observation, and scientific reporting while understanding the impact of humans on coastal ecosystems.

Ocean Life Education can assist in bringing learning to life with a Human Impact themed incursion or excursion featuring live marine animals at your school.

Barrier Reef Rescue Challenge

  • Age Group: Upper Primary & Secondary
  • Activity: Students design innovative solutions to help protect the Great Barrier Reef. Ideas could include reef-friendly sunscreen campaigns, artificial reef structures, or awareness programs targeting tourists.
  • Twist: Turn it into a “Shark Tank”-style pitch where students present solutions to a panel of teachers or local environmentalists.
  • Learning Outcome: Encourages problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of coral bleaching and reef conservation.

Microplastic Detective Hunt

  • Age Group: Primary
  • Activity: Using sand, water trays, and a simple sieve, students search for microplastics and other tiny pollutants hidden in “coastal samples.”
  • Twist: Incorporate a citizen science element: submit collected data to Australian research projects tracking microplastic pollution.
  • Learning Outcome: Students see firsthand how tiny pollutants threaten marine life and learn that even small actions (like reducing plastic use) make a difference.

  • Age Group: Primary & Secondary

  • Twist: Encourage creative storytelling that also teaches about threats like habitat loss, climate change, or coral bleaching.
  • Learning Outcome: Fosters empathy, environmental literacy, and creativity while teaching students about ecosystems and biodiversity.

Classroom Climate Action Campaign

  • Age Group: Secondary
  • Activity: Students investigate how climate change affects Queensland’s coasts and coral reefs. They then create a multi-media campaign for the school or local community promoting climate action.
  • Twist: Include social media posts, a mini-podcast, or even a short school news segment.
  • Learning Outcome: Students connect local ecosystems to global climate issues and develop digital literacy, communication, and advocacy skills.

Bringing Coast Care Week Alive

To make these projects truly effective:

  • Collaborate with Ocean Life Education and/or local environmental groups, such as Coolum Coast Care and Sea Shepherd Queensland to examine animals and environments firsthand.
  • Use real-time data from government or NGO sites for reef and coastal conditions.
  • Encourage cross-curricular integration: science (ecosystems, climate change), English (storytelling, presentations), and civics (community engagement).

By focusing on hands-on projects, storytelling, and citizen science, Coast Care Week can spark curiosity and inspire students to become lifelong protectors of Queensland’s shores and the Great Barrier Reef.

Turtle Lifecycles: Great Barrier Reef Science for Primary Students

 

Turtle Life Cycle

 

The turtle lifecycle is one of nature’s most fascinating journeys – and a perfect topic for Australian teachers exploring science, sustainability, ocean heritage, and ocean ecosystems through the Australian Curriculum. By focusing on turtles of the Great Barrier Reef and South East Queensland, students can connect learning with real-world local habitats and understand how humans can help protect these graceful ocean travellers.

 Turtles of the Great Barrier Reef and South East Queensland

Green turtle

Six of the world’s seven marine turtle species visit Queensland waters, including the Green Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley, Flatback, and the occasional Leatherback Turtle.

  • Green and Loggerhead Turtles are most commonly seen around the Sunshine Coast and Great Barrier Reef.
  • Flatback Turtles are unique to Australia and often nest on Queensland beaches.

These species play an important role in keeping seagrass meadows (found near Moreton Island) and coral reefs healthy.

The Turtle Lifecycle Turtle hatchling

Teaching the turtle lifecycle provides a hands-on way for students to explore growth, change, and survival. The main stages include:

  1. Eggs – Female turtles come ashore at night to lay eggs in the warm sand.
  2. Hatchlings – Tiny turtles break free after about 6–8 weeks and make a perilous dash to the sea.
  3. Juveniles – They drift on ocean currents and feed in floating seaweed beds.
  4. Adults – After decades at sea, turtles return to their birthplace to nest, completing the life cycle.

This sequence supports Science Understanding: Biological Sciences (Years F–6), where students explore living things’ life stages and life cycles.

Local Context: Habitat, Season and Threats

In South East Queensland, turtle nesting season runs from October to March. Students can investigate local beaches such as Noosa, Coolum, and Mon Repos, where Loggerhead and Green Turtles lay eggs.

Common threats include:

  • Plastic pollution and marine debris mistaken for food
  • Coastal development reducing nesting habitat
  • Climate change, which affects sand temperatures and hatchling gender
  • Boat strikes and fishing nets

These topics link directly to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, encouraging students to consider how their actions affect marine ecosystems.

Connecting to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives

Aboriginal turtle art

For thousands of years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have had deep cultural and spiritual connections to sea turtles.

The Kabi Kabi, Butchulla, and Woppaburra Peoples along the Queensland coast recognise turtles as part of their ocean heritage, using traditional knowledge to manage marine environments sustainably.

Including these perspectives helps students appreciate First Nations knowledge systems, aligning with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority.

 

Classroom Activities and Teacher Handouts Plastic Diary

Life Cycles of Ocean Animals for Schools

Marine animals have diverse life cycles depending on their species and ecological niche. Here are some common life cycle patterns observed in marine animals:

Oviparous

Producing young by means of eggs which are hatched after they have been laid by the parent.

Many marine animals lay eggs that hatch then undergo a series of developmental stages before transforming into adults. For example, sea turtles lay eggs on beaches, and the hatchlings make their way to the sea where they undergo a pelagic (open ocean) stage before maturing into adults.

Viviparous

Give birth to live young.

These species nourish their developing embryos internally and give birth to fully formed offspring. Marine mammals such as shark life cycles whales, dolphins, and seals exhibit this type of life cycle. The majority of sharks give birth to live young too.

Metamorphosis

Change of physical form, structure, or substance.

Some marine invertebrates, such as sea urchins, sea stars, and certain types of crustaceans, undergo metamorphosis. They start their lives as larvae, which go through a radical transformation to become adults.

Complex Life Cycles

Many marine invertebrates, like corals and certain types of worms, have complex life cycles involving multiple stages and forms. They may have larval stages that float in the water column before settling on a substrate and metamorphosing into adults.

When coral polyps are sexually mature and their cells produce gametes (egg and/or sperm). The gametes are fertilized and produce a zygote which creates new cells and eventually forms a new coral polyp.

Planktonic Life

Numerous marine organisms, including various types of zooplankton and phytoplankton, have life cycles that occur entirely within the water column. These organisms often have free-floating larval stages that drift with ocean currents until they develop into adult forms.

Life cycles can vary greatly among different marine animal species. Factors such as reproduction, development, feeding habits, and habitat requirements influence the particular life cycle patterns observed in each species.

Turtles

Turtles have an intriguing life cycle that involves various stages of development and unique behaviors. Here is an overview of turtle life cycle the life cycle of turtles:

  1. Nesting and Egg Laying: Female turtles return to land, usually the same beach where they were born, to lay their eggs. They dig a hole in the sand using their hind flippers and deposit a clutch of eggs. The number of eggs in a clutch depends on the turtle species, ranging from a few to over a hundred. Once the eggs are laid, the female covers the nest with sand and returns to the sea.
  2. Incubation: The eggs are left buried in the warm sand to incubate. The temperature plays a vital role in determining the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer temperatures typically produce females, while cooler temperatures result in males. The incubation period can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions but generally ranges from several weeks to a few months.
  3. Hatching: When the time is right, the hatchlings begin to emerge from the nest. Using their egg tooth, a small pointed structure on their snout, they break open the eggshell. Hatchlings often emerge together in a group, which provides some protection against predators. It’s estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood.
  4. Journey to the Sea: Once they hatch, the tiny turtles instinctively crawl towards the brightest light, which is typically the reflection of the moon on the ocean’s surface. This natural instinct helps guide them towards the water. They may face various challenges on their way, such as avoiding predators and navigating obstacles.
  5. Pelagic Stage: After reaching the water, the hatchlings enter what is known as the pelagic (open ocean) stage. During this period, they spend much of their time floating and swimming in the open ocean, away from coastal areas. This stage can last for several years, depending on the turtle species.
  6. Growth and Development: As the hatchlings continue their journey through the pelagic stage, they undergo significant growth and development. They feed on a diet consisting mainly of plankton, small organisms, and jellyfish, depending on their species.
  7. Juvenile Stage: After the pelagic stage, the turtles begin to transition into the juvenile stage. At this point, they leave the open ocean and migrate to coastal areas, such as estuaries and nearshore habitats such as coral reef. Here, they find shelter, food, and suitable environments to grow and mature.
  8. Maturation: The turtles continue to grow and mature over several years or even decades, depending on the species. The time it takes for turtles to reach sexual maturity varies widely among species, ranging from a few years to several decades.
  9. Reproduction: Once turtles reach sexual maturity, they return to the nesting grounds, often the same beach where they were born, to lay their own eggs. This completes the life cycle, as they repeat the process of nesting and egg laying.

 

The life cycle can vary among different turtle species. Each species has its own unique behaviors, migration patterns, and habitat preferences. Environmental factors, such as temperature, habitat availability, and human activities, can also influence the success and survival of turtle populations throughout their life cycle.
